Long Eggplant, Hawaiian Mix
Solanum melongena
Long eggplant cultivars are preferred by many of Hawaii’s growers, chefs and the local community.
This mix of long eggplant varieties are varieties developed by the University of Hawaii and includes selections from Poamoho, Hamasaki, and Nitta crosses. Eggplant can be grown year around in Hawaii and prefers well drained soil and a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.8. Tender skin fruits range from 8-12 inches in length and will produce for a long season when well cared for.
Eggplant is typically started in the nursery and is ready for the field after 6-8 weeks. Space plants 24” - 36” apart and provide a good stake or trellis to support healthy growth. Encourage production by picking fruit often and before fruit have a dull color and are oversized. Prune plants to maintain a single leader with a double or triple branching on the top of the plant to spread out fruits.
