Love Lies Bleeding
Amaranthus Caudatus
Exotic and easy to grow in sub-tropical gardens, Love Lies Bleeding looks best toward the back of a flower bed as it can grow 3-4 feet tall. The smaller side shoots are lovely in floral arrangements. While the genus name Amaranthus means unfading, this refers to the longlasting blooms, rather than the lifespan of the plant. Its species name, caudatus, means 'with a tail', the meaning of which is clear as soon as you see the long, swinging strings of blooms that droop, sometimes from the very top of the plant to ground level. The deep burgundy color is striking among other flower colors in a garden bed.
Does well in full sun. Direct seed or start in a smaller pot and transplant. The leaves and seeds of Amaranth are a food around the world, but this variety is not for eating and is for your flower garden only.
