White Velvet Okra
Abelmoschus esculentus
This tender, heirloom okra variety is a generous producer of white, velvety, spineless fruits! Smooth, spineless pods remain tender up to 8 inches long and are delicious eaten fresh off the plant, cooked, or canned. Most okra varieties have spines that make prepping the vegetable a difficult experience, but this heirloom variety is prized for its smooth velvet fuzz, making it easy to cook and edible raw. After harvesting, the pods need to be laid out to dry and then they can be used in recipes, eaten raw, and do well canned.
White Velvet Okra has been designated by Slow Food as a culturally important, exceptionally delicious, and endangered heirloom from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and is listed in their Ark of Taste.
Cultivation: We recommend starting seeds in the nursery, transplanting into a sunny spot with 18" spacing in the garden about 2-3 weeks after germination. Okra will be ready to harvest about 45 days after transplanting. Once producing, continuous harvesting is recommended, at least every other day.
